Abstract

Although the color term *Āl ‘red, scarlet’ is an ancient lexeme, its distribution across Turkic languages is uneven. Therefore, questions of its origin, distribution areas, and how it functions in modern Turkic languages are of interest. In this study, we attempted to find answers to these questions using the capabilities of the LingvoDoc linguistic platform. First, we searched for cognates for the color scarlet/pink in Turkic languages. Second, we conducted an etymological analysis of the word. Third, we compiled a map of the distribution of this lexeme across Turkic languages. It has been revealed that PTurk. *Āl ‘red, scarlet’ represents a late acquisition of the Proto-Turkic language, which, during the historical differentiation of the Turkic languages, became entrenched in most of them (in the Oghuz and part of the Kipchak subgroups). The remaining languages use internal resources (descriptive constructions) or borrowings to denote scarlet and pink. This distribution testifies to a complex diachronic dynamic, where the fate of the word was influenced by both internal processes of linguistic evolution and external factors of language contact.
