Abstract

This article focuses on the diary entries of Ibrahim Makhmutov (1878-1916), which provide valuable insights into the history of the village of Varna, a large community of Turkic Cossacks from the Orenburg Cossack Army, represented by the Tatars. These entries offer a glimpse into the daily life and linguistic characteristics of the Muslim Tatar Cossacks in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. By using the LingvoDoc platform to process and analyze the phonetic data, a comprehensive description of the phonetic system has been obtained. The text of the diary is very close to the modern Tatar language; it should be noted that the transition processes in the area of vowels and consonants are complete. The analyzed diary contains the following features: a) the correspondence of [u] to literary [ı], b) delabialization of the labialized [ö]; c) a characteristic initial [y]. These features are not diagnostic of the Nagaybak dialect; these differences bring it closer to the dialects of the western dialect of the Tatar language. Ibrahim Makhmutov quite consistently preserved the features of his "mother tongue" in his diary entries. In the use of [-ıv] and [-еv], the diphthong system is very close to the modern Nagaybak dialect. The linguistic characteristics of the diary entries of a resident of the village of Varna show that by the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Nagaybak dialect had not yet been completely leveled.
